There is a place called Moseul*, named thusly because of how much sand is there. The barren sand glitters with a black shade due to its high salinity. In fields and in oceans, the black glitter of black sand is said to mean spirituality. Perhaps it was a search for an omnipresent God. The night is long where God is needed. People of the black land lit the fields during long nights every year. The smoke of what seems like an unquenchable fire rises, becoming rising clouds. The smoke passes by the airfield in the lower yard, and then over the caves. It passes by the rises of the middle mountains one by one. The wildfire burns all night, and it drives out the dark nights, lighting up the morning. The light reveals the fields which have turned to a dark shade. The burnt fields' black ash glows like the most fertile soil. The black shade after the fire is both death and life. Prosperity grows on the basis of death. It is a premonition of a new change that is born again by death.
*Jeju dialect for sand
모래가 많아 모슬*이라 불리는 곳이 있다. 소금기 많아 척박한 모래는 검게 빛난다. 들에도, 바다에도 검은 모래가 가득한 곳에서 검은빛은 신령스러움을 뜻한다고 한다. 만물에 거하는 신을 찾고자 한 것일까. 신을 필요로 하는 곳의 밤은 길다. 깊고 어두운 밤의 그늘은 덤불 속에도, 오름 위에도 드리워 있다. 검은 땅의 사람들은 해마다 긴 밤이면 들에 불을 놓았다. 좀처럼 꺼질 줄 모르는 들불의 연기가 오름으로부터 구름이 되어 솟아오른다. 연기는 아래쪽 뜰의 비행장과 진지, 동굴 위를 차례로 지나간다. 그리고 중산간의 오름도 하나둘 스쳐 간다. 들불은 밤새도록 타올라 어두운 밤을 몰아내고 아침을 밝힌다. 날이 밝으면 들은 더욱 검게 변해 있다. 타버린 들의 검은 재는 가장 비옥한 토양과 같은 빛을 띤다. 들불 이후의 검은빛은 사死인 동시에 생生이다. 죽음을 토대로 풍요가 자란다. 죽음으로써 다시 태어나는 새로운 변화의 예고이다.

The island is defined relatively. The larger of the islands becomes the "main island", and even bigger yet is the "mainland". However, the weak and low remain as one "small" island. An island's existence relies on other islands. Instead of huge lands, islands are separated by distance, forming a multitude of islands. The sea separates the islands from each other, but the island is actually connected deeply within the sea. If you lowered all the water, the islands would form a huge mountain range as a single piece of land.
섬은 상대적으로 존재가 정의된다. 여러 섬 가운데 더 큰 섬은 주主섬이 되고, 그보다 더 크다면 육지가 될 수 있다. 그러나 약하고 낮은 곳은 하나의 작은 부속 섬으로 머무른다. 섬은 서로의 존재로 인해 섬이다. 섬은 거리를 두고 따로 떨어져 존재함으로써 거대한 육지가 아닌 무수히 작은 섬의 무리를 이룬다. 바다가 섬과 섬 사이를 갈라놓는다. 그러나 섬은 사실은 바다 아래 깊숙이 연결되어 있다. 바닷물을 다 끌어 올린다면 섬은 한 덩이의 땅으로써 거대한 산맥을 이룰 것이다.
