FIRE AND WAVES
불꽃과 파도
2020 - Due to the current era of the pandemic, I spent more extended periods in the studio than usual, gazing at my artwork for prolonged durations. Naturally, I found myself immersed in the recurring images of fire and water that appear on the canvas. Flames and smoke, waves and foam surprisingly shared similar shapes, not only in appearance but also in their characteristics. They both rise upwards, only to fall back down, creating ripples and scattering debris.
 Flames, though momentarily burning and disappearing, are finite. In contrast, waves are ceaseless, constantly surging forward, seemingly infinite. Flames, unlike waves, burn and leave ashes, disappearing. This finiteness is akin to the dramatic change that occurs when new life emerges in the wake of a wildfire, as if overcoming death. On the other hand, waves have been continuously surging from beyond the sea for a very long time. Although they may seem to break and vanish upon reaching the shore, some return to the sea or transform into clouds and rain. Eventually, they become waves again, reaching an infinite cycle.
Therefore, both flames and waves signify the beginning of change and repetition. They evoke a sense of beauty and danger, carrying both anxiety and hope due to the unpredictable chain of transformations they bring about. Thus, in the face of uncertainty, people seek the shapes of small hopes, lighting a fire in the early stages, launching fireworks, or finding solace by the sea, listening to the sound of waves, and contemplating the horizon beyond the coastline. 팬데믹이라는 시대 상황으로 인해 평소보다 스튜디오에 더 긴 시간 머물며 작품을 오래도록 바라보았다. 그리고 자연스레 화면 속 풍경에 반복하여 등장하는 불과 물의 이미지에 침잠하게 되었다. 불꽃과 연기, 파도와 물거품은 의외로 서로 닮은 형상을 띄고 있었다. 이들은 모습만 닮은 것이 아니라 속성까지도 닮은 듯했다. 위로 솟아오르지만 이내 떨어지기를 반복하고, 파동을 만들어내며 잔해를 퍼트린다.
불꽃은 잠깐 타오르고 사라지므로 유한하지만, 파도는 끊임없이 밀려오며 무한하다. 불꽃은 파도와 달리 타오르고 재를 남기고 사라진다. 이러한 유한함은 마치 들불이 지나간 자리에서 새 생명이 죽음을 딛고 태어나듯 극적인 변화의 계기가 되기도 한다. 반면에 파도는 아주 오래전부터 바다 너머로부터 멈추지 않고 밀려오기를 반복한다. 파도는 해안에 이르러 부서져 사라진 것처럼 보이지만, 일부는 다시 바다로 돌아가거나 구름이 되고 비가 되기도 한다. 끝에는 다시 파도가 되어 돌아옴으로써 무한함에 이른다.
그러므로 불꽃과 파도는 각각 변화의 시작이며 반복이다. 완전하게 예측할 수 없는 연쇄적인 변화를 불러일으킨다는 점에서 불꽃과 파도는 아름다우면서도 위험하며, 불안과 희망을 동시에 품고 있다. 그래서 불안함에도 작은 희망의 형상을 찾고자 초에 불을 붙이고 폭죽을 쏘아 올리고, 바다를 찾아 파도 소리를 들으며 수평선 너머를 가늠하는 것일 테다.
