Water symbolizes the movement of the world, the flow of circulation. It takes on the most changeable forms. Water is an object that symbolizes the changing world and the landscape itself. To me, the sea is a massive aseembly of water and a manifestation of the natural cycle. The sea is chosen for its painterly representation to express the visual and tactile texture of water. My interest in the texture of the sea began with works depicting the seascape of Jeju Island. Observing the waves, I thought their continuous undulations resembled furrows or fields. Eliminating all information about the sky and the coastline and filling the screen with a close-up shot is an expressive emphasis on water as the subject before it becomes the sea. This composition aims to emphasize the surface of the water, and furthermore, its texture, light, color, and depth. The sea fragmented in close-up in the artwork is a kind of any-space-whatever (l’espace quelconque) as mentioned by Gilles Deleuze. It could be the sea of Jeju Island, but it is also a universal landscape as the sea in its essence. The sea as an arbitrary space is not the sea of any specific place, but it transcends time and space, becoming the sea everywhere.
물은 순환이라는 세계의 움직임을 상징한다. 그것은 가장 변화무쌍한 형태를 지녔다. 물은 변화하는 세계를 상징하는 사물이자 풍경 그 자체이다. 나에게 바다는 물의 거대한 집합체이자 자연 순환을 드러내는 제재이다. 바다는 물의 시각적·촉각적 질감을 표현하기 위해 선택한 회화적 재현의 풍경이다. 바다의 질감에 대한 관심은 제주도 바다를 묘사한 작품에서부터 이어졌다. 제주도 바다를 관찰하며 파도의 연속적인 굴곡이 들 또는 밭과 유사하다고 생각했다. 하늘과 해안가의 모든 정보를 삭제한 채 화면 가득 클로즈업한 연출은 대상이 바다이기 이전에 물이라는 것을 강조한 표현이다. 이는 물의 표면, 나아가 그것의 질감과 빛, 색채, 깊이를 보여주기 위한 구성이다. 클로즈업으로 파편화된 작품 속 바다는 들뢰즈가 언급한 임의의 공간(l’espace quelconque)의 일종이다. 그것은 제주도의 바다일 수도 있지만, 물의 근원으로서의 바다라는 보편적인 풍경이기도 하다. 임의의 공간으로써의 바다는 어느 곳의 바다도 아니지만, 시공간을 초월하며 모든 곳의 바다가 될 수 있다.
